FAIRMONT — A Fairmont Area Schools seventh-grader is on his way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 24 in Washington, D.C.
Dominic Lund-May correctly spelled “neutron” to outlast 27 other students through 14 rounds of competition. Participating were in grades 5-8.
Lund-May was awarded a plaque, a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica Online, a one-year subscription to the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online, and travel expenses and accommodations to the National Spelling Bee.
Martin County West seventh-grader Ava Scarfpin finished in second place in the event. “Erstwhile” knocked her out in round 13.
Third-place finisher Eli Stoll of St. Peter exited in round nine after misspelling “quizzical.”
Other local participants in the regional bee included Clark Hazard of Fairmont Elementary School, Clare Striemer of St. John Vianney and Phoebe Madsen of Granada-Huntley-East Chain.
Zach Ritz of Truman Public School qualified for the bee but was not able to participate.
