“What started out as the Spread the Word to End the Word, a campaign dedicated to ending the use of the R-word, has become Spread The Word: Inclusion. We’re focused not just on the elimination of a word but on the creation of a new reality: inclusion for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID).
Language that excludes, dehumanizes, and demeans individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is a cruel and hurtful weapon. Here at Special Olympics, we want to cultivate a culture of respect and inclusion, recognizing that the language we use has the power to shape our attitudes and actions. Going all in(clusive) also means speaking up against the wrong and demeaning use of the R-word in conversations.
Let us work together to build a community that embraces diversity and celebrates the unique contributions of every person, regardless of ability or disability.”
