Kathleen Walker
8th Grade English Teacher
About Me:
Hello! My name is Kathleen Walker. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Education from Concordia College-Moorhead in May 2015. I hold a Grade 5-12 teaching license in Communication Arts/Literature from the state of Minnesota.
I am now in my 10th year teaching and have always been at Fairmont. I teach English 8, and I am the head coach of the speech team and assistant coach of the debate team. I serve the Education Minnesota-Fairmont Union as the President. I live in Fairmont with my husband, Erik Walker, who also works in the district as a tech specialist, college speech teacher, and assistant speech coach and head debate coach. We love working together in the same building! We enjoy spending time together watching TV shows, playing games with friends, and traveling for the holidays to see family and friends in Minnesota and Iowa. My mother Stephanie is an Elementary Principal in Des Moines, Iowa, and my brother is a nurse at the University of San Francisco.
English 8 Gradebook:
In 8th Grade English, I use a Standards-Based Reporting System. There are 8 Essential English Standards. Within those standards, I will report progress to reflect current learning. The 4321 grading scale is used. Students who are at a 1 are approaching learners and not quiet yet grasping the concept and practice is absolutely needed; a 2, students are developing learners and are getting close to understanding the concept and practice is needed; a 3, students are proficient learners and are showing mastery of the concept and are encouraged to continue working towards the next level; a 4, students are extending learners and are at a level of mastery in which they could teach others the concept.
* (asterisk) in Skyward means: I do not yet have evidence to from the student to show what they can do. It likely means they have not yet turned in learning evidence (such as a writing assignment, a reading test, or any other forms of learning evidence that I enter). Students with a * need to give attention to the assignment so that I may report where they are at in their learning.
PARENTS: Ask your child to show you their grades on Skyward to start a discussion about their learning! In addition, please do not hesitate to email/call with questions about grades in Skyward.
